As the new school year commences at the Abbey C.B.S. in Tipperary Town, new Principal John Kiely takes the reins from his predecessor John Heffernan.
“I am honored to be appointed Principal of the Abbey school; it’s in a very good place at the moment in no small way due to the dedication and hard work of the last Principal, Mr. John Heffernan. We have a very energetic, enthusiastic, professional teaching and support staff and a vibrant student body drawn from the town and its hinterland giving a lovely mix of interests. The Board of Management, headed up by accountant Mr. Michael Martin, is also very committed and ambitious,” said John.
Principal Kiely studied a degree in Economics and Math in UCC and obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science in 1995 before completing a Graduate Diploma in Education Business in University of Limerick. With a mathematical background, John has a methodical approach to all that he does and is also passionate about all sports being have involved with school teams since he joined the Abbey teaching staff.
For the last four years he has been involved in Limerick hurling. and joined John Allen’s management team looking after the Limerick senior hurling team culminating in them winning the Munster Senior Hurling title this year.“We have a proud tradition of academic performance that is seen in our fantastic Junior and Leaving Certificate results. However, it is very important to point out that the school has a wonderful caring spirit, epitomised by the resource department that assists our students with learning difficulties. Every student matters in the Abbey and another priority is turning out ‘honest-to-goodness’ decent young men and I believe that we achieve that here. I look forward to what promises to be a very challenging but rewarding role as Principal of the Abbey School.”
