New suicide support service for those in crisis

The National Office for the Prevention of Suicide (NOSP) is to make a new free-call telephone number available for anyone seeking suicide prevention support.

The initiative, to be launched next month, will be run in partnership with The Samaritans and offers support to those seeking advice, support or help in a crisis.

As chair of the newly-formed local support group C-SAW - Community Suicide Awareness Workers - Cllr. Joe Leahy says “I warmly welcome any initiative that improves the current situation”.

NOSP announced the introduction of the new free-call number in conjunction with a range of other supports, including the increase of suicide prevention officers around the country from 10 to 16.

Ten people in Ireland die by suicide each week, according to Gerry Raleigh, Director of NOSP.
