Prendergast organises special conference on pylons plan

MEP for Ireland South, and member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the European Parliament, Phil Prendergast, has announced a high level conference on pylons entitled “Upgrading the National Grid- European Best Practice and Alternative Options”.

The conference will run from 7pm to 10pm and will be held in the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny on Friday, February 14.

The conference will feature a number of distinguished speakers from the European public and private sector including the European Commission. The purpose of the event is to look at the situation across the European Union in relation to the upgrading of grid networks to examine best practice models and realistic alternatives.

The conference will focus in particular on the following discussion points:

From Ireland to Sweden- The costs and the benefits for local communities of high voltage underground networks

Electro-magnetic fields and their potential impact on human and animal health

Grid Link or Grid Lock- The economic impact of pylons

Speaking about the conference, Ms. Prendergast said - “Thousands of people in Ireland South let their voices be heard when they made submissions to EirGrid in relation to the proposed works.

“I, like many others, made a detailed submission outlining my own concerns from the perspective of living in the area, as well as my viewpoint having met many of the groups myself over the past number of months. People are worried about the impact of these plans on their families and on their livelihoods.

“It is important that some of the myths which have been propagated, particularly by the government side, are tackled head-on, and that we maintain momentum in our fight to prevent the destruction of our historical, cultural and geographic landscape across the country.”
