The final of the Tipperary Town Skittles Tournament came to an exciting climate last weekend with reigning champions the Quinlans needing all their experience to overcome the plucky challenge of team Snooty Pig 2.
A huge crowd gathered for the showdown of this old revived popular sport and the excitement grew as the tension mounted.
The Snooty’s secret weapon, Trish O’Brien, expertly took out the ‘1’ to level the game but the throw was deemed short at the line and Mark O’Neill from Quinlans 1 stepped up to do the necessary to give Quinlans a 4 - 2 victory.
Quinlans: Harry Ronan, Mark O’Neill, Adam Ryan and Liam O’Dwyer celebrated their win with runners-up team The Snooty Pig 2: Pa Quinn, Seamie Curtin, George O’Neill and Trish O’Brien.
Mary Dalton acknowledged all the teams and competitors and presented the winners with an impressive trophy for the pub along with cash prize and medals for the players. The gallant runners up also received cash prize and medals.
A huge debt of gratitude goes to the tournament organizers Olivia Dalton and Nuala O’Sullivan who scheduled, ran and coordinated the whole tournament while acting as scorekeepers and peace makers along the way.
The Tipperary Town Skittles tournament was revived after a twenty-year absence during the 2012 Long Way to Tipperary festival.
“With its popularity growing year-on-year and the prospect of each pub having their own in-house tournaments, the future looks bright for the age old game of skittles,” said. Olivia Dalton.
Congratulations to Barry Fitzgerald who won the mini tournament in the play off between all the players who ‘cleared the ring’ during the tournament.
The organisers wish to thank all the pubs that took part and supported the 2014 Skittles tournament.
