Hundreds of former students, teachers and parents joined with current staff, pupils and the general public at the 150th anniversary celebrations in Rockwell College in Cashel on Sunday last.

The centre piece of the day was a special outdoor anniversary mass celebrated amid glorious sunshine by the Archbishop of Cashel & Emly Dr Dermot Clifford as well as over 50 clergy from the Holy Ghost (Spiritan) congregation including Provincial Fr Marc Whelan and the Tipperary Gospel Choir.

College Principal Ms Audrey O’Byrne said the story of Rockwell College is a remarkable one.

“From its origins as a missionary college through to the present day it has undergone many changes and along the way, has also reflected wider social changes; the struggle for land rights, the development of the GAA, the nationalist movement, the establishment of the State, the foundation of the Irish education system, the economic difficulties of the 1980s, the popularising of co-education, these are social milestones for our state and impacted on Rockwell College and its pupils in a very real way.

With these changes the values and tradition of Rockwell College have remained constant”.

She added - “When Charles Thiebault invited Fr Jules Leman to establish a seminary for the education of priests for the Scottish diocese on his property at Rockwell, it is unlikely that either man envisaged what Rockwell would become.

It evolved into Rockwell College, a centre of Education that would produce missionaries, presidents, statesmen, sportsmen and women, priests, bishops and cardinals, writers, engineers, architects, musicians, scientists, educators, doctors and judges.

“It has educated thousands of pupils over 150 years and all of us here today can look forward to that continuing into the future”.
