Sinn Fein’s David Dunn wins first Council seat

Sinn Fein candidate David Dunne from Carrick-on-Suir has become the first councilllor elected to the new Tipperary County Council.

He topped the poll in the Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District and was elected on the second count with 1429 votes -17 over the quota of 1412-following the redistribution of elminated Labour candidate Michael Cleere’s votes.

He said he was ecstatic at winning the first seat on the new Council. “It’s an unbelieveable feeling. This is my third time running for election so it’s third time lucky.”

He credited his success to his hard work in community organisations in Carrick-on-Suir and the swing towards Sinn Fein in the elections reflecting voters dissatisfaction with the Government’s unpopular austerity policies.
