One of Carrick-on-Suir Town Council’s longest serving councillors has resigned his seat so that a fellow Sinn Fein party member running in the local elections next June can take his place on the Council for the remainder of its term.

Sinn Fein Cllr Liam Walsh from Marian Ave., Carrick-on-Suir announced his resignation after 20 years service on the Town Council at the end of the Council’s last ever budget meeting on Tuesday, December 18.

He said he was retiring five months before the end of the Council’s term to allow David Dunne, Carrick’s Sinn Fein candidate in the upcoming elections to the new unified Tipperary Co. Council to be co-opted to the
Town Council.

“I feel it’s only fair that I try and facilitate him in any way,” said Cllr Walsh referring to the benefit that being a member of the Town Council will have to raising the candidate’s profile in the town before the election.

Mr Walsh, however, won’t be retiring from local politics.

He informed the meeting he had been elected as chairman of the Sinn Fein party organisation in Co. Tipperary.

He confessed he had been a reluctant councillor but nonetheless enjoyed his time as a councillor and was honoured and privileged to serve on the Council.

“It’s sad to see the local councils across the country being abolished. I hope the new model will be better but at the moment I am not convinced it is,” he added.

Mayor of Carrick Kieran Bourke led the tributes and best wishes and on behalf of the Council presented Liam with a crystal bowl to mark his retirement.

“You have served the people of Carrick and your party very well. I always knew you to be a straight man and honest man, whose word was his bond in politics and in his private life,” he said.

Town Manager Pat Slattery said he heard Liam being described by his elected colleagues as a gentleman, a man of integrity, honourable, humble, noble and unassuming. He believed all those words summed him up and were richly deserved.
