Welcome for Cahir library upgrade

Fine Gael Councillor Marie Murphy has welcomed the green light for remedial works to the library in Cahir.

“The job was put out to tender by the Council last week and the Council expects to engage the services of an architect in the next two weeks to undertake an assessment of the needs of the building,” Cllr Murphy explained.

“Whilst essential works will include elements of roofing, wiring, lighting and heating, it is also hoped that the appointed architect can also provide an artist’s impression of how the library could be improved from a visual and user’s perspective” said the candidate in the Clonmel/Cahir electoral area.

“This news is wonderful. Cahir library is close to my own heart,” Cllr Murphy continued.

“I was Chairperson of the Tipperary Joint Libraries Committee in 2010/2011 and I have been responsible for getting the book bus to Clogheen every summer since 2009. Cahir Library has had lots of different problems over the years, not least the heating, so I’m really pleased that we are now at this stage,” she added.

“The next step is that once priority works are identified, these will be carried out by funds already in place, by the end of this year. These works will be managed and overseen by the Housing Section of the Council.

“In the medium term it is hoped that the council can then undertake a more detailed redesign of the building to provide additional accommodation space for the library. Thereafter planning permission will be applied for if required and Council staff have told me that if these things are in place, we will be in a better position to access funds to complete the redesign work.

“Cahir library is a wonderful resource for everyone in our community and I have been honoured to work towards its maintenance and improvement. I will be keeping a close eye on progress over the coming months to ensure a timeline of delivery is adhered to,”she said.
