Anger as fire engine damaged by vandals

South Tipperary Fire Service has condemned the vandalism of one of its main fire tenders in Clonmel while fire fighters were attending to a fire in the town.

Chief Fire Officer Tadhg O’Driscoll said gardai were investigating the smashing of the windscreen of the vehicle, which occurred in a residential area of the town around 9pm on August 29 while fire fighters were dealing with a garden fire.

He pointed out that the damage had resulted in the appliance having to be taken out of service and its equipment transferred to a training vehicle for a period of time in order for repairs to be carried out.

“We are extremely disappointed with the damage caused to this appliance,” said the Chief Fire Officer. “Any interference with a front line emergency vehicle is a serious offence and it’s being investigated by gardai.

“This was the first such incident in quite a while and luckily nobody was injured but it resulted in the Fire Service incurring unnecessary expenditure at a time when our resources are very scarce,” Mr O’Driscoll continued.

“We are just requesting the public to continue to co-operate with the Fire Service,” he added.
