Around the Clubs

Some club reports which appear in this week's issue of "The Nationalist"...

T.A.R.A.

Back again after our summer break. Our Chairperson Mary Swords chaired our meeting held on Friday 3rd September. There was a very good attendance. All present received informationgo about the various classes for the next term. Thanks to P.J. for his work. Details are also on the notice board. Classes begin 2nd October.

Our twelfth birthday party was held in Ballykisteen Hotel on 10th of June. Many thanks to the staff who catered for a large crowd of 236 members from far and wide.

The Trabolgan trip for a week took place from 11th of June and we returned 'well rested', already thinking of next year. Much planning goes into organising this and is really appreciated.

Our annual Mass was on June 22nd and is a lovely get-together with a cup of tea and music afterwards.

The only fundraiser we do each year is the Strawberry Fair in aid of South Tipperary Hospice. The sum of €2000 was presented to them at the meeting , and be assured it was well received.

Many of the members had a lovely time in Devon and Cornwall travelling with Matt Kelleher, and many more went on a day trip to Galway on 28th July.

Now that we are back in business ,many are looking for a few days break, as we had to cancel some during the Summer.. We are trying to organise a 3 day break in Kilkenny, 19th 20th and 21st October. Office open 13th and 14th September. Also, a day trip to Newbridge, Kildare Outlet and Japanese Gardens on September 18th. Office opened 13th and 14th also for names and deposits. Some of our members are off on the 'annual sun holiday' and we wish them a safe journey. Next meeting 1st October.

Arravale Rovers Juveniles

After a great season the U-12 hurling second team found Rockwell Rovers were too good for them. These lads put in a big effort and they just enjoy playing hurling. Great credit is due to their mentors for unearthing new talent for the club with many of this crop young enough for next year. Training will continue during the autumn months to develop the skills base that all our Under 12s have, with the exciting prospect of the new format under 12 blitzes of 2011 in mind.

Last weekend training continued at Sean Treacy Park for our U-12s, 8s and 6s with a good turnout. We hope to have games for the U-10s, 8s and 6s this Saturday, 11th September., all going well.

The U-10s turned up in large numbers last Saturday for the Festval of Hurling next door to Semple Stadium at Dr Morris Park. All 30 players hurled themselves to a standstill in the magical sunshine. It was difficult to keep track of the non-stop action with games won and lost and won again with bewildering velocity.

The following players gave it their all and learned a lot for future reference: Tadhg O Connor, J J Bennett, David Kelly, Alex Ryan Wynne, Daniel Ryan, Darren Heuston, Andrew Richardson, Niall Sharpe, Tom Rhatigan, Brian Roche, Noel O Mahony, Diarmuid Cummins, Adam O Donnell, Neil Aherne, Jake Mulcahy, Killian Noonan, Sean Smith, Jamie Lonergan, Jonathan Ryan, Edward Moroney, Mark Butler, Andy Richardson, Finn McCall, Adam Dunne, Edward Nolan, Ronan Finnan, Mark O Donovan, Jake O Dwyer, Daniels Nikolievo and Thomas Kamenskos.

Well done lads and mentors and a special well done and mile buiochas to the parents who drove all 30 players to Thurles and back, in what turned out to be a long but hugely enjoyable, sunny day's hurling.

The U-14 hurling shield semi- final, against Cappawhite, is fixed for this Thursday, 9th September. at Cappawite 6.45pm.

On Saturday, 11th September. the U-16 hurlers play their West Championship semi-final against the winners of the Cappawhite, Rockwell, Eire Og play-off.

St Michael's Schoolboys

U-14 team played Peake Villa away in the league last week. St Michael's were put under early pressure but good work from Gavin Hickey and Gillian Piteauze helped keep Peake out. Sean Brennan and Elliott Thompson got on top in midfield and we had good chances from Pierce Dwyer and Seanie Halloran. Saints took the lead just before half-time when Philip Roche scored. In the second-half St Michael's played some nice football and created some very good chances, which we were made to pay for when Peake equalised three minutes into injury time to snatch a point. Final score: Peake Villa 1 St Michael's 1.

U-15 League's first game of the season was at home to Clonmel Town last Saturday. We were finding it hard to break through a good Town defence but we were giving very little away too. A long pass caught us square and Town got the first goal within 20 minutes. We had a goal disallowed when Sean Stokes scored. Jamie Tierny, Darren Neville and Daniel O'Dea were starting to get more ball in midfield but with 10 minutes to half-time Town went 2-0 up. In the second-half hard work by Daragh Coughlan, Walter Carroll, Dean Holmes and Brian O'Dea kept us well in the game. Town added a third goal 12 minutess in to the second-half but our heads never dropped and Fionn Hogan pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to go and with some more luck we could have got a other goal. Also to play was Luke O'Dea, David Stapleton, Kevin Stapleton and Gillian Pitueavue. Final score: St Michaels 1 Clonmel Town 3.

Fixtures: Wednesday 8th U-13s home v Bansha Celtic. U-15s away v Clerihan. Saturday 11th U-12s away v Peake Villa. U-14s home v Vee Rovers.

Galtee Walking Club

While some 25 members away in the Alps, another 20 turned up at Bansha Woods on Sunday to open the new season of walks. A mood of suppressed expectation was almost palpable as they assembled in the car park, the hope that on this special day, Tipperary might just be in with a chance. The walk was incidental! Carefully timed by our leader Danny to allow everyone to get home on time for the big event, this 12mile walk on a warm but overcast day, took in a circuit of the woods, along lovely grassy and gravel paths, bordered by blackberry laden brambles and the fading blooms of heather and gorse. Crossing the Ballagh Road, they headed on towards Christ the King where they enjoyed a lunch break and the glorious vista of the Glen and Mountains beyond and, hidden below the statue, Danny pointed out a small and poignant memorial to three friends and lovers of this heavenly spot whose ashes are interred there. Where better place to rest. Then it was on through a crisp and dry nature park to exit at the hotel and take the road up to Rock an Thorabh car park. With still a stretch to go, and keeping an eye on the clock, they turned up the path to the Rock to make their way back to Bansha woods. Then it was hell for leather into the cars and off to enjoy Tipperarys' glorious victory. Many thanks Danny for organizing and leading the first walk of the season, a walk which will now surely go down in history. Thanks too to Rita for her gracious sweeping duties.

Next week's walks: Sunday 12th September Paddy Burke will lead a gentle climb of Galtee Mor from the southern side. Meet at Skeheennarinka Village at 10am for this 4hr climb. There is also a C walk starting at 11am and led by David Stapleton. Meet at Woodies car park for car pooling to the start of this 2+hrs climb to Clonmel Cross.

Do visit our website and tell us what you think of the club on our message board.
