Sunshine greets captains drive-in

GENTS:

Last Sunday we witnessed the first official duty for the incoming Captain’s for 2013 with the occasion of our Men’s Captain John O’Connell and Lady Captain Neasa O’Donnell’s Drive-In. A huge crowd gathered for the proceedings which included the red carpet treatment from Ballykisteen Hotel for both Captains upon their arrival.

Both Captains were very well turned out in their club colours and mingled among the crowd who enjoyed tea and scones in the Junction One bar before the big event.

Willie Hartnett, Tony Browne and Alan Dunphy carried out the draw for the 3 person scramble with great efficiency with a total of 35 teams taking part. Just after 12.15 in glorious Spring sunshine, John and Neasa made their way to the 10th tee box for the eagerly awaited Drive In and Neasa set the tone by hitting a super drive down the middle of the fairway followed by a huge cheer from the onlooking crowd. Following a bit of hush, John calmly proceeded to hit an massive drive down the middle of the fairway 50yds short of the green which was also followed by a huge cheer and applause. Finally, it was Junior Captain Cathal McGrath to ‘hit-off’ from the 10th tee box and he followed the senior captains with a super drive down the middle of the fairway to close the formalities. Everyone then departed for their respective tee boxes and waited for the traditional Graham French ‘gun-shot’ to start the 9 hole scramble in perfect conditions.

Afterwards, all assembled in the Ballyk Bar for some delicious treats.

All at Ballykisteen Golf Club wish Neasa and John unqualified success throughout the year ahead.

The winning team in the scramble were the team consisting of Joe McDonald, Gerry Doherty and Kiara O’Keeffe, with Fr. John Morris, Larry Kelly and Kathleen Meehan coming second and Charlotte Crowe, Nancy Buckley and Nora Clein in third place.

LADIES:

The Gods were in our favour with the beautiful sunshine for our Captains Drive-In. John O’Connell and Neasa O’Donnell were greeted by a huge crowd and both looking splendid indeed in their club colours.

To great cheers our Captains led the way for our 3 person mixed scramble and the sun continued to shine for the day.

Adjourning to the Ballykisteen Members Bar after golf both Captain’s delivered fine speeches and the presentation of prizes took place.

The winners were: 1st, Joe McDonald, Gerry Doherty and Kiara O’Keeffe. 2nd Fr. John Morris, Larry Kelly and Kathleen Meehan. 3rd, Charlotte Crowe, Nancy Buckley and Nora Clein. Well done all.

Wishing all Ballykisteen captains the very best in the year ahead. Hopefully the good weather on Sunday last will continue throughouth 2013.
