Boxers get into shape for charity fight night

Time is fast approaching for the Clonmel Lions Club Charity Fight Night on Saturday, November 17th. The dinner boxing tournament is a worthy fund-raising event and will be held in the Clonmel Park Hotel.

Week 3 of training is now underway. Night 1 began with what Martin Fennessey, head coach, described as “light training”. Observing the pugalists you would wonder how they would handle tough training! As you can imagine, for a tournament like this, there are different levels of fitness starting off. What is obvious to the observer is the total commitment of the contestants. That means no alcohol, a proper diet and a complete dedication to a fitness regime set out by coaches Martin, John and their team. 18 women and men representing 11 companies are competing in this worthy fundraiser for Clonmel Boxing Club. Training twice weekly is no easy task, after work, but all are willing to make this a great event.

The boxing club needs fundraising in order to keep this highly sucessful club afloat. Success costs money and with over 60 national and international titles to their credit these can only be achieved by a massive commitment by both boxers and coaches. National and international training camps cost money and lots of it. For this reason the Lions Club has organised this fund-raiser for the club.

Every Tuesday and Thursday night the boxers train under the expert guidance of Martin Fennessey, John Mackey and a host of club coaches who all give of their time freely to ensure all are guided in the rudiments of boxing. Some of the boxers are working shiftwork and are being accomodated with morning training.

The contestants are Cathal Coffey, representing Kentz; Cian Dreeling, Joe Fitzgerald, Amy English, Gary Scott, Bassem Vassin and Gary Power representing Abbott Vascular sports and social club; Martina Salach and Joe Guiney representing Camida; Sarah Neddy, David Conway and Daniel Lyne representing Merck, Sharp and Dohme; Michael Murphy representing Suirpharma; Martin Shanahan representing Leetherm; Gary O’Shea representing Medite; Dean Kennedy representing Merry’s; Seamus Hackett representing Rainbow roofing and Patrick Hackett representing Bulmers.
