Fine Gael TD for Tipperary South, Tom Hayes, has confirmed that a robbery took place in his constituency office in Cashel. It is suspected that the break-in took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“I can confirm that there was a break-in at my constituency office in Cashel last night. Office equipment and computers were stolen during the robbery and some damage has been done to the office itself. Needless to say, the Gardaí were contacted as soon as the break-in was discovered this morning and they are currently investigating the incident.

“Over the years, we have been contacted by well over 13,000 constituents seeking help on various issues. Although all of their details are stored electronically, I want to reassure them that there is no danger of their personal details being compromised. All of our Oireachtas computers are equipped with a Checkpoint Encryption System that will prevent any such information falling into the wrong hands.

“As well as informing the Gardaí of this incident, we are of course required to report the matter to the Data Protection Commissioner. I am happy to say that the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has concluded their investigation and are satisfied that no breach occurred.

“I do not believe that this robbery was in any way politically motivated. My main focus now is getting our office up and running again as quickly as possible so that we can continue to cater for the needs of my constituents.”
