British flag to be replaced after vandals damage pole

The relationship between Ireland and Britain, which has been stronger than ever in the last couple of years, was put on an even firmer footing by Queen Elizabeth’s state visit last year. However the spirit of friendliness and co-operation between the countries was lost on vandals who tried to remove the British flag displayed in Clonmel’s Mick Delahunty Square.
Town Clerk Ger Walsh confirmed that the flagpole had been bent and damaged during an attempt to remove the flag in August, but said that a new flagpole had been ordered and the Union Jack flag will be restored.
The British flag was among the flags of the 12 European countries that participated in the Entente Florale environmental competition earlier this year that were displayed at Mick Delahunty Square, in the area between the County Council offices, the post office and the library.
Clonmel, which represented Ireland in the competition along with Abbeyshrule in Longford, was awarded a silver medal by the Entente Florale judges.
Ger Walsh said it was decided to leave the flags in place after the judges’ visit at the beginning of August.
Inserts had been placed in the footpath so that the poles could be erected and taken down in a short space of time and the poles could be decorated with different flags to celebrate any other festivals, events or special occasions in the town, the Town Clerk added.
