Carrick-born sister 99 years old and 80 years a nun
Sr Vincent (Nelly) Power of the French order Soeurs de Marie Joseph et de la Miséricorde recently celebrated the jubilee of her profession as a nun 80 years ago. She is a hale and hearty 99 years of age and pictured here under Carrick's town clock tower close to where she was born at the top of Kickham Street – still known to her by its older name, Lough St.
Sister Vincent, on a short holiday in Carrick on Suir from the mother house of her order at Le Dorat in western France, is staying with her niece Kitty Moloughney.
She left Carrick in 1927 as a postulant and was professed three years later. Most of her life and work as a nun has been in women's prisons and orphanages in France, following the exacting and selfless mission of her order.
Other Carrick women joined the same French order in the past. Apart from Sr Vincent – now believed to be the oldest member of the order – Sr Thomas Aquinas (Nelly Foran) still survives, though in a frail condition.
The Jubilee celebrations for Sister Vincent and other nuns of the order took place at the mother house at Le Dorat on July 4 and Power family members Nicholas, Siobhan, Ella and Alice (Hunt), with Sr Vincent's grand-niece Emma Barry, travelled to France to attend the happy occasion. Sister Vincent was honoured by Carrick Town Council some years ago. All will join again in congratulating her on her long life of good works and the significant milestones she has now reached.
