Carrick Town Council remembers the late Dick Meany

Tributes were paid at Carrick-on-Suir Town Council's July meeting to businessman and local musical theatre legend Dick Meany, whose death last month was greatly mourned in the town.

A vote of sympathy was passed at the meeting to the family of Mr Meany, who was proprietor of Meany's Shoes and a central figure in many of the town's organisations, most notably Carrick Musical Society, the St Vincent de Paul and the business association.

Carrick Musical Society member Cllr Sylvia Cooney-Sheehan, who proposed the vote of sympathy, said Dick's passing was an enormous loss to Carrick-on-Suir and to the Musical Society in particular.

He was held in such high esteem that people drove from all over Ireland and flew over from England to attend his funeral.

She described him as a "father figure" to the Society's members and a great listener. He gave an enormous amount of his life to the Society and the Strand Theatre was a testament to his work for the organisation.

Cllr Cooney-Sheehan spoke of efforts he put into fundraising for the theatre and how he got Society members to climb on buses after finishing work to go fundraising because they believed in him.

She also spoke of how he encouraged Musical Society members talents and abilities and helped some forge careers on the stage and how all his employees at Meany's Shoes held him in the highest esteem.

Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Richie O'Neill said he wish to concur with all Cllr Cooney-Sheehan had said and extended his sympathy to Mr Meany's family.

Cllr. Margaret Croke (FG) said Dick Meany was always there for everybody and recalled how helpful was to her when she used to bring shoes to elderly patients in Waterford. It was difficult to get the right fitting shoes for them but Dick always allowed her to take away shoes to try on. "Dick always said 'take the shop'. There was never a problem."

Independent Cllr Patsy Fitzgerald said Mr Meany never turned down a request for help and praised the support he had given to local businesses and community groups.

Workers and Unemployment Action Group Cllr. Martin Henzey echoed this view. "He gave an awful lot of people in this town help that no one knows about," he said.
