Young children in the Lusaka oprhanage who will benefit from the proceeds of this week's collection in Clonmel organised by the local Rotary Club.

A collection takes place in Clonmel this weekend with all proceeds going to help orphans in AIDS-ravaged Zambia.

The flag days are an annual fundraiser organised by Clonmel Rotary Club and take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

All monies collected go directly to an orphanage in Lusaka run by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa.

One of the pioneers in this wonderful work was the late Sr. Lucy O’Brien, sister-in-law of well-known Clonmel accountant and long-standing Rotarian Tom O’Gorman.

The work is now being carried on by Sr. Marie O’Brien, who visited Clonmel over a year ago to thank the Rotary Club for their ongoing generous donations, which make such a huge impact on the lives of the orphans.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic had a huge impact on Zambia and out of a population of 12 million it is estimated that there are more than one million orphans.

The most recent donation from Clonmel Rotary Club to the orphanage was €E2,000 and Sr. O’Brien explained to the Rotary club how that money was spent and how it has greatly improved the lives of the children.

And while this country is going through difficult times at the moment, the suffering is nothing compared to that endured in countries such as Zambia and Rotary Club president Gerry Flynn has appealed for the most generous response possible to this week’s collection.

“The people of Clonmel have been extremely generous in the past and I have no doubt they will maintain that generosity this week for such a worthy cause”, Mr Flynn said.

The collections take place at Superquinn, SuperValu in the Poppyfields and the Credit Union on Thursday and Friday and at Superquinn, the Credit Union and The Showgrounds on Saturday.
