Clonmel saddened by deaths of three prominent figures
There was a profound sense of sadness in Clonmel in the last week over the passing of three well known figures.
John O’Neill, a former ACOT/Teagasc officer, and father of Tipperary senior hurling coach Paudi, died on Sunday at the Beacon Clinic, Dublin.
On Thursday last Joe Flaherty, a former board member of Avonmore, died at the Cottage Nursing Home, Clonmel and John O’Regan, a former railway station master at Clonmel and Dungarvan, died at the Mercy Hospital in Cork.
John O’Neill, Powerstown Road, Clonmel who was very involved with St. Vincent de Paul and parish Lourdes activities, is survived by his wife Tess , three sons Paudi, Seamus and Terry and two daughters Grace and Maura. His removal took place last night from O’Donoghues Funeral Home at 8pm to Ss. Peter & Paul’s and burial takes place today (Wednesday 6) after 11.30 requiem mass.
Joe Flaherty, Ballingarrane, Clonmel died last Thursday at the Cottage Nursing Home in Clonmel. He was husband of the late Josephine and has three sons Liam, Brian and Michael and two daughters Mary and Margaret.
A native of St. Patrick’s Terrace, Clonmel, he moved to Ballingarrane to farm as a young man. He was very well known in farming circles not only in the locality but throughout Munster and Leinster as a result of his extensive involvement with Avonmore. He was a former board member of Avonmore and a former chairman of the Miloko plant outside Carrick on Suir. A tribute was paid to Joe following requiem mass in St. Marys church, Irishtown on Saturday last by Victor Quinlan of Glanbia who would have succeeded Joe on the board of Avonmore in 1996.
John O’Regan, Abbey Meadows, Clonmel , who was the last Clonmel based station master, also died last Thursday. He passed away in the Mercy Hospital, Cork. He is survived by his wife Anne, sons John (Noel), Terence and Fergal and daughter Fiona. He retired as station master in 1989. His burial took place in St.Patrick’s cemetery on Sunday afternoon following requiem mass in St. Mary’s Irishtown.
