Computer skills course the perfect career path for Jason
Jason Campbell from Cashel is a student on the Computer Applications and Office Skills at National Learning Network on Western Road in Clonmel.
Having dyslexia, Jason struggled in school and felt disillusioned and frustrated; he had no idea what he wanted to do when he finished.
His guidance counsellor mentioned National Learning Network and how it focuses on each student as an individual and allows people to learn at their own pace.
For Jason, it was the perfect solution. The Computer Applications and Office Skills course allowed him to pursue his interest in computers and software.
Jason says - “I went to try it out and the minute I walked in, I thought, yes, this is where I want to go next. The instructors here are amazing. With my dyslexia, I often struggle with words, but they break everything down for me so that it is easier to understand. They are friendly, helpful, supportive and, most of all, very good listeners.
“Whenever I am in need of help in any situation, I just ask my instructors if I can talk to them, and they see me straight away. There is a really good friendly environment here and the students all help each other out when we are stuck.
“My favourite part of the course is ECDL as I never got a chance to do it in school. When I started I was racing through the manuals at a fast pace, but the instructors encouraged me to slow down to a steady pace that was more manageable.
“I’m also learning Irish Sign Language which is really interesting and not something that I ever have thought I’d want to learn.”
National Learning Network has had a big impact on Jason’s life.
“Before coming here I thought my life would go nowhere, but National Learning Network has given me the support, courage and, most of all, guidance from instructors and resource teachers to change my life for the better.”
With nine months left in his two-year course Jason plans to do more study in the area of computers with a job in computer maintenance being his ultimate goal.
