Council has collected 75% of rates levies
Carrick-on-Suir Town Council has so far collected 75% of commercial rates bills levied on 270 local businesses last year, it was reported at the local authority’s February meeting.
Town Clerk Michael O’Brien informed the Council that the total warrant of commercial rates levied by the Council last year was E914,833 and to date E707,000 of that sum has been paid by Carrick-on-Suir businesses.
A total of 80 businesses still have to pay part or all of their rates but most of these have payment plans or agreements in place with the Town Council to pay the bill in installments over a period of time through standing orders or payment scheme.
Mr O’Brien pointed out that the collection rate for this tax last year was 2% higher than the previous year and outstanding arrears have declined by 8%.
He said occasionally a business in the town closed and the owner disappeared but most business people did engage with the Council and actively try to come to some agreement to pay the rates they owed.
Cllr Kieran Bourke paid tribute to the Council’s commercial rates collector Carmel Hanrahan for the good relationship she has built up with local businesses.
Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Liam Walsh and Cllr Sylvia Cooney-Sheehan expressed surprise that the collection rate was so high.
Commercial rates account for about 20% of Carrick-on-Suir Town Council’s annual revenue.
