Carrick-on-Suir councillor Bobby Fitzgerald has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton that struggling mortgage holders will be able to avail of a new independent financial advice service, free of charge.

“Under this plan, homeowners who are in long-term mortgage resolution negotiations with a lender, can consult their plan with an independent financial adviser, of their choice, he explained.

“Given how complex mortgage negotiations can be, this service will help to level the playing field and arm the mortgage holder with more knowledge, so that they can be confident hey are receiving the best payment plan to help them stay in their homes.

“The lender will pay €250 to an accountant of the mortgage holders choosing for this advice, and the cost of this service will be paid entirely by the banks and other lending institutions.

Cllr Fitzgerald further explained that the Citizens Information Board have also launched a new website Keeping Your Home, which offers detailed information on this and other measures for distressed mortgage holders.

A new Mortgage Arrears Information Helpline is also available to offer financial guidance. The Helpline number is 0761 07 4050, Monday to Friday 9.30am -5pm, he added.
