Detained Albanian held in Cahir garda station

One of the ten Albanian men taken into Garda custody on Tuesday, as part of an investigation targeting a gang involved in almost 50 burglaries across eight counties, was brought to Cahir Garda station.

The men were arrested when a number of houses were raided as part of Operation Crake. This arose out of an initial investigation into a post office burglary in Ardfinnan, when a large amount of cash was taken.

This led to comparisons with other break-ins in Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, dating from October 2008 until last May.

Most of the burglaries were from post offices and filling stations but the gang's targets also included shops, pubs, nightclubs and a church.

The 10 suspects, aged between 30 and 44, were arrested on Tuesday morning in 22 raids on houses in six counties.

Their periods of detention were extended on Tuesday night and they can be held without charge for a maximum of seven days.
