Drove other youths to collect drugs, court told

A young Carrick-on-Suir man who agreed to drive other youths to collect illegal drugs was found guilty of the possession of a controlled substance at Clonmel Circuit Court.

Jonathan Griffin, 17, Kilonerry Close, Carrick-on-Suir, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Michael O'Shea.

Griffin was charged that on September 4 last, at Kildalton in Piltown, he was the person in control of a car and did knowingly permit the possession of a controlled drug, ecstacy.

Detective Garda Michael Hennebry told the court that on the date in question the car driven by Griffin was stopped by Garda as a result of surveillance.

During a search of the car 2122 ecstasy tablets were discovered in the possession of the front seat passenger.

A third youth was sitting in the back of the car.

Griffin was arrested.

During the investigation Garda discovered that Griffin was only a driver. Earlier on the evening of the offence he was asked to drive from Carrick to Piltown, by one of the other youths, to collect drugs. He knew this was the purpose of the trip.

In his Garda interview he was very co-operative, Garda Hennebry said. Griffin admitted he had made a mistake.

He was not profiting from the trip, Garda accepted, and he was enlisted to drive purely because he had a car. He had never come to Garda attention before or since this incident.

The court heard that Griffin is 20 years old and lives at home. He comes from a good family and is an apprentice block layer.

Griffin's employer was later called as a character witness and the case was adjourned for sentencing.
