Envoy invited to Cashel to mark anniversary of Queen’s visit
British ambassasdor is invited to Cashel to mark the anniversary of the Queen's visit last May.
South Tipperary Fine Gael T.D. Tom Hayes has issued an invite to Julian King, British Ambassador to Ireland, to visit Cashel and South Tipperary as a way of acknowledging the one year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II visiting the town. Her Majesty stopped off at the Rock of Cashel on the last day of her 4 day State Visit in May.
“I have issued this invitation to acknowledge the historic occasion that was the Queen’s visit to Cashel. Not only was her state visit important for our relationship with the UK, but it was pivotal in boosting tourism numbers to Ireland. At the Rock of Cashel alone we have seen a huge increase in British visitors to the site since the visit, with numbers in 2011 greatly exceeding those in 2010.
“It’s important that we continue to promote Cashel, and Co. Tipperary, as a top destination for any British visitors to Ireland. I believe a visit from the British Ambassador on the anniversary of the Queen’s visit would be the perfect way to not just mark the occasion, but provide us with another opportunity to show what Tipperary has to offer.
“Ireland saw a 5.2% increase in British tourists alone last year. That’s over 140,000 more British people spending and sightseeing in Ireland. I have no doubt that a large reason for this substantial increase was the State Visit.
“I hope that the Ambassador will be in a position to accept my invitation, I would be delighted to have him down again, and I hope to see the sort of tourism numbers we saw in 2011, continue into 2012” concluded Tom Hayes.
