Families upset as Cashel cemetery hit by flooding

Families with relatives buried there were upset when St. Cormac’s cemetery in Cashel was flooded in July, Town Engineer Willie Corby acknowledged at the monthly meeting of the local Town Council.
He said that the flooding on July 13 had also affected a funeral that week.
Responding to a query from Cllr. Maribel Wood, Mr. Corby said he was very concerned by the incident.
Heavy rain caused a stream running from the Dualla Road area, and which crossed the motorway to flood the cemetery, as well as the recycling centre.
The stream ran underground in private land beside Leahy Park GAA pitch. The Council was in discussions with the landowner to see if work could be carried out.
The Council could also place an embankment between the cemetery and the recycling centre. This would be subject to some funding becoming available, while they would also seek funding from the OPW to try and divert the upper reaches of that stream away from the town.
Mr. Corby said that this and another major incident on July 10 that hit the Rossmore and Dundrum areas caused the worst flooding in living memory in an area east of Cashel.
