Fitzgerald takes over on UCC body from Archbishop

Michael Fitzgerald Chairman Tipperary South County Council.

Michael Fitzgerald Chairman Tipperary South County Council.

South and North Tipperary County Councils are to have a new representative as a member of the governing body of UCC.

Up to this year the joint councils had nominated the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly for the post. Archbishop Dermot Clifford has occupied the UCC post as the Tipperary County Councils nominee since 1989 and his predecessor Archbishop Dr. Morris served on the governing body as the Tipperary councils nominee prior to that.

Next week the UCC board is set to ratify the new nominee of the joint Tipperary councils, Cllr.Michael Fitzgerald., for a three year period. Cllr.Fitzgerald’s nomination was approved at a joint meeting of South and North Tipperary County Councils held in Clonmel.

Having a lay nominee brings the Tipperary County Councils, which are set to amalgamate, into line with other local authorities who nominate elected representatives.Cllr. Fitzgerald said he was honoured to receive the nomination. He was looking forward to the challenge and wanted to use his position on the board to strengthen third level education in Tipperary. He was not in favour of the government proposal to increase student registrations fees and said such an increase would impose financial stress on parents.

He paid tribute to Archbishop Clifford for his ‘tremendous contribution’ during his years on the governing body.
