Garda heroes rescue man from inferno

Three courageous gardai saved a man from a burning house in Clerihan last week just minutes before the bedroom he was plucked from went up in flames.

Gda. John Hennessy and Gda Sean Brosnan risked their lives to go into the burning bungalow and rescue the unconcious man and managed to bring him to safety with the help of their colleague Gda. Mary Lonergan.

The injured man, who was aged in his 40s, was taken by ambulance to South Tipperary General Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit following his dramatic rescue. The three officers were also brought to hospital and tested for smoke inhalation.

The three officers received a 999 call about the house fire at Fernville, Clerihan at approximately 10.50pm last Thursday.

When they arrived at the scene, neighbours informed them that there was a man trapped inside the house.

Sgt. Ian Barrett of Clonmel Garda Station told The Nationalist that Gda. Hennessy entered the burning house and searched around until he found the occupant slumped against a wall in one of the bedrooms. He was unconsious.

"He required Gda Brosnan to assist him. He entered the house and between the two of them they dragged him out. When they got him as far as the window, Gda Lonergan assisted them to remove him from the house.

"They were very lucky. The room they took him out of went up in flames minute after they dragged him out."

He siad the gardai were very, very brave. "They could have easily lost their own lives. That is the reality," he added.

The injured man was the only person in the house at the time of the fire. Two units from Clonmel Fire Station arrived at the scene after the gardai have removed him from the burning house. The fire was put under control by 2am.

Several rooms in the house were gutted by the blaze and the rest of the house was smoke damaged. Gardai are investigating the cause of the blaze.
