Gardai suspect arson in Clonmel pub blaze
Gardai believe a fire at a well known Clonmel pub in the early hours of Tuesday morning was started maliciously.
Garda forensic investigators were examining the scene of the blaze at The Golden Harp Bar on Mitchel Street and the area around the pub was sealed off while they carried out their work.
The fire was discovered by a man living in accommodation over the pub around 3am on Tuesday.
He woke up to the smell of smoke and immediately left the building and ran to Clonmel Garda Station nearby to report the blaze.
Sgt. Tom O’Dwyer of Clonmel Garda Station said the bar was extensively damaged in the fire, which was put under control by fire fighters from Clonmel Fire Service.
There was no one injured in the fire.
“We are treating this incident as suspicious and have a full investigation underway,” he told The Nationalist.
“We appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of the pub between 2am and 3am and saw any suspicious activity to contact Clonmel Garda Station at (052) 6122222.”
