Glenview fun day brings community together

Residents of the Glenview Estate in Carrick-on-Suir came together to organise a fun afternoon of sports for their community's young people.

Highlight of the fun afternoon was the final of a soccer blitz that was run to celebrate the installation of goal posts on the estate's green.

The blitz was won by a team captained by Graham Daniels and the man of hte match in the six-a-side final was Jack Murphy.

Community Development Officer Denis Shanahan said the fun day was organised by Glenview's residents committee with help from other residents of the estate.

"It was a great success and young people from the estate and the neighbouring Ballyrichard Court enjoyed taking part in the games and sports.

Even though there were winners of the various events, each young person who attended received a medal for participating on the day," he told The Nationalist.

Refreshments for the party were provided through sponsorship and donations of food items by residents living on the estate.

Mr Shanahan said the completion of the goal post project in Glenview showed what was possible when people living in an area give some of their time and take an interest in improving the place where they live.

"The committee thank all those who contributed in any way to the success and enjoyment of the day, particularly the sponsors. They also thank the various groups, whose generous funding support made the installation of the goal posts on the green a reality. It's a welcome recreational amenity for young people living in Glenview and Ballyrichard Court," he added.

Glenview's fun afternoon follows a five week summer camp organised by the Glenview After School Club for children aged four to 12 years during the month of July. Its participants enjoyed included bowling in Clonmel, a visit to the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway, swimming at the Sean Kelly Swimming and Sports Centre and Splashworld in Tramore, a visit to the cinema in Clonmel and horse-riding in Whitechurch.

Other activities enjoyed were t-shirt design, art and crafts, cookery lessons and a sports day. This month, the club will be painting a mural. If any children ages 7 to 12 years of age are interested in doing this they can come along and register.

Two artists from South Tipperary Art Centre Avril White and Ronnie Fitzgerald will be assisting in the mural painting.
