Hospital provides End of Life Care
Each year almost 30,000 people die in Ireland, and while surveys suggest that the majority of people would like to die at home the reality is that the great majority currently die outside the home. Three quarters of all deaths now take place in hospitals, with 48% of death occurring in acute hospitals such as South Tipperary General Hospital (STGH).
Since the South Tipp hospital has been working closely with the Hospice Friendly Hospital (HFH) programme to develop a comprehensive framework for the hospital in relation to dying, death and bereavement. Within the hospital there is a huge willingness on the part of all staff to support patients and families at the end of life.
STGH took part in the first ever National Audit of End of Life Care in Hospitals in Ireland (2008-2009) and performed well in this audit. 56% of patients who die in STGH do so in a single rooms, compared to the national average of 44%.
75% of relatives stayed overnight, compared to the national average of 69%
At least one person was present at 77% of deaths in the hospital, compared to the national average of 75%.
Staff within the hospital is committed to getting "what matters most to patients and families" right in relation to Dying, Death and Bereavement.
South Tipperary General Hospital is holding an awareness week on End of Life Care from Monday, 6th -12th September. There will be a display in the foyer explaining further the work of the staff in relation to End of Life Care, which is a core activity within South Tipperary General Hospital.
