Iarnrod Eireann considers automating Carrick rail crossing gates

Iarnrod Eireann has promised to investigate the possibility of making the railway gates at Cregg Road in Carrick-on-Suir automated to solve the long delays for traffic at the crossing, according to a local senator.
Labour Senator Denis Landy said he has received correspondence from Iarnród Eireann Chief Executive Dick Fearn advising that Iarnród Eireann will look at re-prioritising the list for level crossing conversions for this year and investigate the possibility of providing the necessary automation of the crossing in Carrick-on-Suir within the current year’s programme.
The traffic build up at either side of the crossing due to the length of time the gates are closed when a train is passing on the Waterford to Limerick line has been a cause of major concern in the town. The road, which the rail crossing intersects, has been significantly developed over the past decade and is home to hundreds of families, who are affected daily by the delays in re-opening the rail gates.
Last month an ambulance was held up at the closed railway gates for up to 15 minutes while on the way to attend a patient at Cregg Lawns.
Senator Landy said he welcomed the information from Mr Fearn that was provided through Minister Alan Kelly.
“I am pleased this issue has made strong progress and I am hopeful Iarnród Eireann will find it within their budget to automate this crossing this year or certainly next year. There is a serious health and safety issue at this crossing due to the fact that many people are held up here on a long term basis,” he added.
