Ireland tops EU Single Market Scoreboard - Prendergast

Commenting on today’s announcement by the European Commission of the 15th annual Internal Market Scoreboard, Labour MEP for Munster, Ms. Prendergast, who is a full member of the European Parliament Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, hailed Ireland’s progress.

“Our flawless record at translating EU Internal Market Directives into national law on-time enables all Ireland-based businesses to operate in the knowledge that their products will enter a market of 500 million customers in full compliance with EU law.

“We are the single, best EU Member State at making EU Internal Market rules effective, and in due time.

“These single market rules make it possible for our products, services and professionals to cross borders, and have access to markets everywhere in the EU and beyond without barriers, just as if you were selling Limerick-made produce in Cork.

“Ireland is a small, open and export-oriented economy that hosts many overseas investors who recognise our track record and potential as a springboard to do business all over Europe.

“Our achievement on the EU single market front sends a strong signal, to the business community at home and beyond, that Ireland is an ideal operating base where they can manufacture goods and provide services that are fully in line with legal requirements that apply everywhere in the EU and beyond.

“We also know that, given the enormous weight and scale of our single EU/EEA market, the biggest in the world, an increasing number of multinational firms are making their EU products compliant by default, and they certainly have an eye on Ireland as a business base.”
