Kelly says science and technology can boost youth employment

Sean Kelly MEP is calling on the European Commission to include a strong emphasis on science and technology skills in proposals to boost youth employment.
“I have requested that the Commission’s recently proposed Youth Employment Package prioritises the growth sectors of science and technology, particularly when it comes to training initiatives that may result,” the Ireland South MEP commented.
“Across Europethere are around 7.5 million young people aged 15-24, that are not in employment, education or training. We need to get the next generation of employers and entrepreneurs working and training but we need to ensure that they achieve the appropriate skill set to meet labour market demands,” Mr Kelly said as a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry.
The proposal will be reviewed by the European Parliament in the coming months and Mr Kelly will be looking for real, concrete measures to benefit young people. “Investment in youth is an investment in our future.Irelandis home to very successful science and technology companies and those are the sectors that have grown in strength during the economic crisis, they are the future forEurope’s youth.”
Mr Kelly will host a major research and development conference later this year (4-8th March 2013) entitled ‘EU Science, Global Collaboration’. TheBrusselsevent will encourage Irish and European researchers to seize massive EU funding opportunities under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme.
