Knife used in one incident as Clonmel, Fethard hit by spate of robberies
Burglars raided eleven premises including a church in Clonmel and Fethard over the past week and there were two street robberies in Clonmel during the Bank Holiday Weekend.
Jewellery and cash were the prime targets of the burglars while a knife was used to threaten a man and woman walking on a Clonmel street in one of the robberies under investigation.
Gardai believe drugs addicts seeking cash to feed their habit are at the root of some of the crimes committed in the district over the past week.
The first of the street robberies occurred on William Street in Clonmel close to lunchtime on Saturday.
A woman walking on the street at 12.40pm was accosted by a youth, who grabbed her handbag containing an estimated €300 cash and ran away in the direction of Cashel Street.
The robber was of slim build and wore dark clothing and a hoody top, which hid his face. He was chased by two women, who witnessed the robbery, but successfully made his escape on a BMX style bike.
In the second robbery, a man and woman walking on a lane linking Dillon Street to Sheehy Terrace around 3.30am on Monday were held up by two men, one of whom was brandishing a knife.
The robbers took a mobile phone and escaped from the scene on foot. Both were described as having dark skin and were wearing hoodies. One wore a grey hoody and the other was described as wearing black clothing.
Sgt. Tom O’Dwyer of Clonmel Garda Station said investigating gardai were not following any definite lines of enquiry into the robberies at the moment and were appealing to anyone who witnessed either of the crimes or saw suspicious activity in the areas around the robberies on the dates they occurred to contact Clonmel Garda Station with information.
Meanwhile, the church on the grounds of St Luke’s Psychiatric Hospital on Clonmel’s Western Road was one of eleven premises burgled in Clonmel and Fethard since last Thursday.
The church was broken into during Thursday night/Friday morning. The raiders entered the building by breaking a window and caused damage to the interior but didn’t steal any property.
A house at Shamrock Hill in Clonmel was broken into on Thursday between 11am and 12 noon last Thursday but according to gardai there wasn’t any property stolen.
Two houses at Barrack Street and The Valley in Fethard were also burgled last Thursday. Jewellery were stolen from both premises and a mobile phone was also taken from The Valley residence.
A television was stolen from a house at The Green in Fethard that was broken into on Sunday.
Sgt. O’Dwyer said gardai were following a line of enquiry into the Fethard burglaries though no arrests have yet been made.
In Clonmel, jewellery was stolen from a house at Inislounaght, Clonmel that was burgled last Saturday. And the following day, two houses at O’Connell Court, two houses at The Chase and a house on Slievenamon Road were burgled between 9pm and midnight. Small quantities of cash were taken from several of these premises.
Sgt O’Dwyer appealed to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the vicinity of any of these residential areas on the dates they were burgled to assist gardai in their investigations by contacting Clonmel Garda Station at (052) 6122222.
