Laura makes life-saving trip to South Africa

My first trip to Cape Town in South Africa was on November 10, 2011 and from the minute I landed my life changed.
I became involved in an incredible journey where I met amazing people who within a short matter of time became my family and my friends for life.
We all kept the spirits high as we were exposed to the difficult conditions that we never really believe people are experiencing until we witness them first hand. The awful conditions that we saw and the results of the weeks of building helped me to believe that one person can make truly make a huge difference to another person’s life.
It makes me proud to be Irish and to be a part of a group of ordinary people from every walk of life who come together to make an extraordinary team called ‘The Mighty Purples’!
My second trip to Cape Town Wallacedene Township in 2012 was even more life changing than the first as we did not only build houses but we built homes and security and to see a child’s face light up simply because they are able to lock their front door, knowing they will be safe, is an image that will never leave me.
Niall Mellon and the Irish people has housed 100,000 people in 20,000 homes in
the last 10 years , his future plans will take him to Kenya for 2013 not only to build schools but to provide education, he truly is a fantastic man and doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
I would like to thank Michelle Craddock firstly, if it were not for Michelle I would never have made it to Cape Town and also to the man himself, Mr. Niall Mellon, for giving me the opportunity to help others and to experience such a life changing experience.
All my fundraising was based in Cahir, Co. Tipperary and this town has such amazing people I would like to thank a few
for helping me throughout
the year.
From a drag queen night to a darts tournament and table quizzes, thanks to Marie and Tom Carroll of The Hill Bar, Brian Costigan of Morrissey’s Bar, Brian Dolan of Supervalu, Jason Maher and all the staff in the Gatehouse Bar who have being fantastic throughout the year.
Thanks also Paul Darcy, Mike and Jacqueline Neligan, Karen Moloney, Naomi Coonan, Valerie Griffin and to the wonderful Claire Neligan, and to everyone else that supported me, I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making me a better person.
