Loreto project highly commended at Young Scientists expo
Loreto Clonmel students Gemma ODwyer, Elaine Butler and Leanne Murphy whose project was highly commended at last months BT Young Scientists Competition.
Over 2500 projects were initially submitted to the BT Young Scientists Competition in the RDS, Ballsbridge last month and of these only 550 were picked for inclusion in the competition proper, including a project from the Loreto Secondary School, Clonmel.
The project was entitled Teen Gamble, Win or Lose and the group consisted of three Fifth Year students, Leanne Murphy, Gemma O’Dwyer and Elaine Butler.
The project surveyed 1500 teenagers in schools in Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. The surveys revealed that gambling is not necessarily considered a problem among teens but yet over 96% of teenagers have gambled at some stage. It seems we are conditioned at a young age to accept gambling and what seems innocent behaviour at one level is in fact gambling, in some form or another.
The study concludes that education is essential if we are to change people’s behaviour and this includes that of our more vulnerable teenage cohort.
The project received two awards – Highly Commended for Project Content and for Project Display.
Irish Debating team advance
Congratulations to the Loreto Senior Irish debating team of Roisin O’Mara, Aoife O’Loughlin and Charlotte Blackmore, who recently won the second round of the Gael Linn debating competition, Comortas Diospoireachta an Phiarsaigh. They were up against very strong opposition from Ursuline Thurles, Stella Maris Tramore and St. Leo’s Carlow.
Loreto and Ursuline Thurles were successful and both teams now go forward to compete in the next round. The second round was hosted by the Loreto Secondary School in Clonmel and great credit is due to Jessica Keane for organising this event and for the meticulous preparation of the victorious Loreto team. The team received high praise from the judges as they debated for the motion, ‘tá ár bhféininlacht mar thír caillte again in Éireann’ and they now go on to represent their school in the third round just after mid-term break.
This is just reward for all the hard work put in by Miss Keane and the Irish department in providing ongoing inter-class Irish debating competitions in the school. Well done all.
