Mayor leads local campaign to cut fuel tax
Carrick-on-Suir’s public representatives are to be asked by the town’s first citizen to put pressure on the government to reduce excise duty on fuel due to the pressue rising petrol and diesel prices is causing to businesses.
Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Liam Walsh will table a motion at the Town Council’s monthly meeting next Monday night requesting that it call on the Government to immediately reduces this fuel tax.
The Sinn Fein councillor said this tax cut was vital to maintain and create employment and help those who are struggling financially.
He described the excise duty on fuel as excessive and it was placing a serious burden on the haulage and transport industry, which was under serious pressure to maintain jobs, and the agriculture sector.”
“The impact of fuel costs on all sections of the community, travelling to work is now a couple of hundred euros more then at this time last year,” he told The Nationalist.
“Courier and transport services will pass the cost on and will result in and increase cost for the food and all other essentials.
“Agriculture is in a very difficult situation as the weather has been putting farmers to added cost.”
