Mindless vandalism denounced by local community
An arson attack on a construction company’s portacabin on the Ballylynch housing estate in Carrick-on-Suir and the cutting down of two mature Maple trees in a public park in the town were condemned at Carrick-on-Suir Town Council’s monthly meeting.
Gardai are investigating the fire at Ballylynch, which was reported to the emergency services at 9.30pm on Thursday, October 4. The portacabin belonged to the construction company working on the regeneration of the Mountain View neighbourhood of the estate.
Independent Cllr Richie O’Neill, who hails from Ballylynch, told the Town Council meeting that he “deplored” this act of vandalism and declared that the culprits were giving the good people of Ballylynch a bad name.
The cutting down of two Maple trees in Sean Healy Park was also denounced at the meeting.
Independent Cllr Patsy Fitzgerald said the felling of these trees, which he estimated were between 40 and 50 years old at the start of the river walk was “atrocious”.
“People who use the walk were appalled,” he said.
Town Clerk Michael O’Brien said the Council tried to remove some of the wood but were prevented from doing so by some individuals. He said a significant amount of foliage as thrown into the river.
The Town Clerk added that he would be very disappointed and extremely concerned if this activity became the norm. “I hope it’s a once off incident.”
A spokesman for Carrick-on-Suir Garda Station said the gardai hadn’t received a a formal complaint from the Council about the tree felling and understood it was a civil matter.
