Mountain rescue team have to abandon parade to help injured walker

Members of the South Eastern Mountain Rescue team were marching in Clonmel’s St Patrick’s Day Parade when they received an emergency alert about an injured walker in the Comeragh Mountains.

The Mountain Rescue team’s three vehicles along with 13 team members were taking part in the pageant on Sunday afternoon when their phones started ringing furiously just after they passed the viewing stand on Parnell Street.

The mountain rescuers immediately abandoned the parade and made their way to Clonmel Fire Station from where they travelled to area around Coumshinguan Lake in the Comeraghs where two women walkers were in difficulty.

One of the walkers had fallen and sustained a lower leg injury.

SEMRA spokesperson Annie Ryan said they set up an incident base in Kilclooney Woods just off the Lemybrien to Carrick-on-Suir and once they found the injured walker they called for further assistance and the Irish Coastguard Rescue helicopter based in Waterford was summonsed.

The injured walker was airlifted to Waterford Regional Hospital for medical treatment while her companion was assisted off the mountain by SEMRA members.
