Newcastle NS pupils learn about dog welfare at first hand
Dogs Trust, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity, visited Newcastle National School to brief the children on their activities.
It was a great day for all involved with the children showing huge interest in the trust’s work and offering any support they can give.
Since November 2009, Dogs Trust has rehomed over 3000 dogs.
The majority of the dogs at Dogs Trust come from various local authority pounds around the country.
There are currently 161 dogs in the Dogs Trust centre in need of a caring home.
In order to reduce the number of stray and unwanted dogs in Ireland, Dogs Trust also runs a subsidised neutering scheme in conjunction with 300 vets nationwide.
In order to educate the dog owners of the future about how to be responsible dog owners, Dogs Trust Education Officers deliver free and fun education workshops to primary schools in Dublin, Munster and now the South East.
South East Education Officer, Deirdre Uí Dhubhda, spends four days a week visiting primary schools, libraries and youth organisations with her Education Dogs, Sadhbh and Cónán.
On their visit to Newcastle NS,they had a great day teaching the pupils about responsible dog ownership, a dog’s needs and how to be safe around dogs.
Sadhbh and Cónán especially enjoyed meeting the children and having their photo taken!
The children in the school had a non-uniform day and the proceeds of this day went directly to the Dogs Trust.
