Outdoor gym in Elm Park in shake-up for national award

The fully-equipped outdoor gym in Elm Park, Clonmel has been nominated for a national award.

The facility, the first outdoor gym in Tipperary, has been nominated in the Best Sporting Facility category of the LAMA (Local Authority Members Association) awards, which will be be presented at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin on this Saturday night, January 22nd.

The commitment of the community, working closely with Clonmel Borough Council has created this cost-free gym that is suitable for all ages, from beginners to advanced athletes, in the heart of the area.

It has been funded from the HSE Playground Leverage Funding for the RAPID Programme and additional funding was provided by internal capital receipts from Clonmel Borough Council.

It's available for free use to everyone in the community, for both the 800 houses in the estate and the wider town population.

Arising from the development of the outdoor gym, many new activities have taken place in the estate under the lead of a number of agencies and community groups including South Tipperary Sports Partnership, the FAI, the HSE and Clonmel Boxing Club.

The impact of the outdoor gym is one that may not be fully measurable in the short term but rather in the longer term, when the full benefits will be seen through a healthier population in the estate and town.

However it's agreed that this project has proven successful and such projects can act as catalysts for greater positive interaction between the community and local government.

The LAMA Awards, now in their fifth year, hope to further highlight and recognise excellence in construction at local, county and national level. The annual awards ceremony commends individuals, initiatives, private companies and people for their outstanding contributions and projects of benefit to the community.

RAPID (Revitalising Areas by Planning, Investment and Development) is a focused Government initiative to target the51 most disadvantaged urban areas and provincial towns in the country. The implementation of the RAPID programme is led by the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.
