Passing of dearly loved Clonmel family man who enjoyed outdoor life
The late Patrick Power
Patrick (Paddy) Power, ‘Liscara’, 28 Toberaheena, Clonmel died on November 2nd 2012.
Paddy was born on 15 March 1926 and lived in Cashel Road, Clonmel. He had two brothers Davy and Tony and three sisters, Mae, Peggy and Joan.
The Power family later moved to St Patrick’s Terrace. Paddy’s father Joe Power was a tailor in St Luke’s Hospital and had a passion for politics.
Joe Power was a founding member of the Fianna Fail Party in Clonmel and he instilled this same interest in politics in his son Paddy.
Paddy loved the outdoor life, his favourite pastime, while growing up, was chasing rabbits in Watson’s Glen with his good friends the ‘Dag’ Hahissey and Miney Cooney.
Paddy also loved fishing and was an accomplished fly fisherman.
He would often be on the riverside into the early hours of the morning and during these years, fish was the staple died in the Power household.
Paddy also loved listening to classical music his favourite singer being Pavarotti. In fact, Paddy was an accomplished musician himself.
He played the mouth organ and the accordion and was the life and soul of a party, even though he never drank alcohol.
Paddy married Maureen Tuohy and they went on to have nine children. Nothing gave him more pleasure than to bring his family for a Sunday drive and the highlight being an ice cream on the way home.
Paddy was dearly loved by his children and especially his grandchildren who helped to care for him throughout his illness.
Paddy always put people at ease, he always had time to talk and listen to people. People liked being in his company.
He bore his illness with great dignity and remained his placid self.Paddy had many sayings which greatly amused his children and his 28 grandchildren, but the saying which summed up Paddy’ s character was ‘Always do the right thing, it will surprise some and astonish the most.’
