People urged to pay Household Charge to maintain local services

The people of South Tipperary have been urged to pay their Household Charge to prevent massive cuts in local services.
At a special meeting of the county council, called this morning (Friday) Council Chairman John Crosse encouraged people to do whatever they can to pay the charge.
Because only 60% of South Tipp households have paid the new charge over E1.8 million is being withheld from the local council’s budget for the remainder of this year.
At this morning’s meeting the County Manager, Billy McEvoy, told councillors that this means a cut ov over 30% in the budget for road maintenance, and a cut of 15% in building and housing maintenance grants.
There will also be cuts to water maintenance, the fire brigade service and libraries, as well as in other areas.
Many councillors speaking at the meeting acknowledged that no one wanted to pay an extra tax but urged everyone to obey the law of the land to support local services.
However members of the Workers and Unemployed Action Group maintained their opposition to the charge and called on those who have not paid to stick with them.
