Peter O'Donnell wins Photographer of the Year award

Clonmel-born Peter O'Donnell A.I.P.P.A, Q.E.P was named the Irish Professional Photographers Associations (IPPA) - RSA Insurance Professional Photographer of the Year at the weekend.

Peter, whose stunning pictures of the Irish landscape are gaining an international reputation, was presented with the coveted award by IPPA President Paddy Clarke at the awards ceremony took in Ballymacscanlon House Hotel, Co. Louth last Sunday evening.

He also secured the Landscape Portfolio category award on the night. "I was shocked and deeply humbled as the standard at this year's awards was exceedingly high", he commented. He is currently overseeing preparations for the opening of a gallery in Castleconnell, Co Limerick. Two of the pictures in his award-winning panel were taken in the Comeragh Mountains, while the others were taken in the Galtee Mountains and in Co. Kerry.

The son of Peter and Bridget O'Donnell, Clerihan, he now lives and works in Lisnagry, Co. Limerick. He has been working as a professional photographer for the past five years, having previously worked as a graphic designer.

Peter operates a successful business selling photographs of the Irish landscape from his studio outside Limerick, and on-line. "The photos are really for anyone who has a space on their wall and we produce prints on cotton-rag paper, which ensures they won't deteriorate or discolour'"

While he travels all over the country for his work, he also takes photographs at numerous locations in South Tipp including Slievenamon, the Knockmealdown Mountains, Galtee Mountains and the most beautiful location in Ireland in Peter's opinion, the Nire Valley.

This year's competition attracted 2,000 entries in the competition from IPPA professional photographers from all over Ireland. This is the 15th year that RSA Insurance has sponsored the IPPA National Photographic awards and touring IPPA exhibition. The winners' exhibition will shortly start its countrywide tour. All IPPA members are qualified, registered and insured professional photographers.
