Clonmel's mayor, Cllr Dinny Dunne, has warmly welcomed flood relief grants of over j97,000 that have been paid out by the Irish Red Cross in the Clonmel area this week.
A total of €97,039 has now been allocated by the Irish Red Cross to 33 householders within County Tipperary, chiefly in Clonmel. The humanitarian aid was based on a five point scale of severity of losses with amounts paid varying from between €1,000 and €5,000, depending on the scale determined by the Irish Red Cross engaged assessors who called to all applicants.
Speaking to The Nationalist, Mayor Dunne said he "more than welcomed" the cheques for homeowners who faced clean-ups and repairs in their homes because of flood water damage last November.
Describing the Red Cross aid as a "good gesture" the mayor said that while the money would not cover all the costs faced by households that were affected by the floods, it would go some of the way.
"I'm delighted the money has come forth. This is a help," he stressed.
The mayor went on to say that he hopes Clonmel won't see similar flooding damage to homes in the future, with the completion of the town's flood defences. "I'm more than confident that once the flood scheme is complete we won't see flooding," he said.
Stage one of the project is almost complete and tenders are being invited for stages two and three, which will be constructed in tandem. According to Mayor Dunne it is hoped that the project will be fully complete by late in the summer of 2011, or by the end of that year.
The Irish Red Cross received over 400 applications for humanitarian aid from householders from those areas around the country most affected by the devastating floods.
7% of the applications received by the Red Cross related to County Tipperary, principally from the Clonmel area, which was very badly affected by flooding before Christmas. 417 households around the country have received flood relief cheques last week from the Irish Red Cross thanks to j1.4 million generously donated by the people of Ireland to the Irish Red Cross Flood Disasters Appeal.
Mr Tony Lawlor, Acting Chairman of the Irish Red Cross, stated: "Those who are receiving Red Cross funds last week have gone through the loss of property, trauma, and hardship and while the funds will provide some comfort, nothing will ever compensate them for that awful experience," he said.
The Irish Red Cross has been accepting applications to its Flood Relief Fund since the end of December, encouraging victims of the floods to apply for humanitarian assistance. The closing date for applications was extended from Friday 22 January until Friday 5 February, so as to provide householders with sufficient time to make applications. Thereafter an assessment process involving an assessor visiting each applicant before the amounts were decided and which have now been paid out.
Mr Lawlor said that the Red Cross is very grateful to the individuals, groups and firms who donated €1.4 million to the Irish Red Cross for humanitarian assistance for flooded householders.
