South Tipp Council boundary changes will divide parishes claim
The Cashel electoral area is set to be “decimated” in a proposed redrawing of the county electoral boundaries, according to one local councillor.
Speaking at the recent meeting of South Tipperary County Council, Cllr Tom Wood said a proposal to divide the Cashel area between the Tipperary area and the Fethard area “would have a huge negative impact on all the Cashel electoral area - there are even parishes divided.”
Cllr Wood told the meeting that 24 submissions have been made to the Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee, including a joint submission from North and South Tipperary County Councils. It is this submission that caused him concern.
He said he was totally opposed to the abolition of the town councils.
Cllr Louise McLoughlin said her own parish looks set to be divided. She said she was disappointed with the council’s submission.
Carrick on Suir is over 50km away from Cashel, it makes no sense, she said. “That’s not putting people first.”
Cllr Bobby Fitzgerald said he was also disappointed with the council’s submission.
“Town councils are the strongest voice for people,” Cllr Billy Shoer said, and Cllr Pat English described the abolition of town councils as “a con job by the minister.”
