Mayor of Clonmel Billy Shoer has called a special meeting of Clonmel Borough Council for Tuesday night to discuss the proposed aboliton of the 400-year old council.

Minister Phil Hogan’s cull of local authorities includes the Clonmel council as well as town councils in Tipperary, Cashel and Carrick on Suir.

The loss of the three smaller town councils was expected but the plan to also abolish Clonmel Borough Council came as a bombshell.

“This rubbishes our history. If this is what the government is all about they can hang their heads in shame”, Mayor Shoer said in response to the Minister’s announcement.

He has now called the special meeting for Clonmel Town Hall on Tuesday evening to allow his fellow councillors give their response to the abolition.
