Waterford City Suicide Prevention

World Suicide Day takes place around the globe on the 10th September each year. The theme for this year is “Suicide prevention across the globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling hope.

In Ireland, there are over 500 deaths by suicide each year.

More people die of suicide in Ireland each year than in road traffic accidents. We have one of the highest rates of suicide in the 15-24 age groups in Europe and a recent survey by the Irish Association of Suicidology indicated that three out of every four people know someone who has died by suicide.

Waterford is unique in that it is the only city in Ireland to have its own integrated action plan for suicide prevention. In 2008 Waterford City Development Board officially launched this Suicide Prevention Action Plan for Waterford City called “Reflecting the Challenge”.

The purpose of World Suicide Day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. The WHO estimates that about one million people around the world die by suicide every year. The Waterford event will be one of many events held worldwide to publicise World Suicide Prevention Day which is held every year on September 10th.
