Tinvane Retail Park rezoning proposalgoes on display at Carrick Town Hall
The people of Carrick-on-Suir's views are being sought about a proposal to rezone part of an empty retail business park in Carrick-on-Suir to make it more accessible to stores like Heatons and Penneys.
Carrick-on-Suir Town Council has begun a month long public consultation process in relation to the Carrick-on-Suir Town Development Plan variation it is proposing for the Tinvane Retail Business Park.
The variation seeks to change the zoning of two of the units not exceeding 16,000 square feet in size at the Pill Road business park from retail warehousing for bulky goods to "comparison" retailing making it possible for stores selling household goods, clothing, footwera and stationery like Heatons and Penneys to locate there.
The business park, developed by Portlaw builder Martin Brophy, has lain vacant for four years.
Clothing and household goods retailer Heatons had expressed an interest in locating at the park over two years ago but were unable to do so because the zoning of the park meant only retailers selling bulky goods such as furniture could set up shop there.
Earlier this summer a majority of the Town Council voted in favour of broadening the zoning of part of the retail park to take shops selling "comparison" goods.
However, a majority of the council was not in favour of the recommendation by Council planners to broaden the zoning further to retail development, which would allow the big supermarket multiples selling groceries to locate there. The reason was their fear that such stores would take business away from town centre retailers.
Members of the public have until 4.30pm on Monday, September 20 to lodge their views on the proposal in writing to Carrick-on-Suir Town Council.
A copy of the proposed draft variation is currently available for public inspection at the Town Council Offices, New Street from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am 4.30pm until September 20. It went on public display on Monday, August 23.
Details are also available for viewing on the South Tipperary County Council website www.southtippcoco.ie.
Town Clerk Michael O'Brien said all submissions from the public will be taken into account by the Council before deciding on the rezoning proposal.
