Tipp councillors hold their first meeting in stunning new civic offices

It was a historic evening as Tipperary Town Council held their first ever monthly meeting in their new abode in the Civic Offices at Rosanna Road, Tipperary.
‘We are finally here and it is absolutely fantastic,’ stated a clearly delighted Mayor Ruadhri Devitt welcoming the members to their new home.
Tipperary Town Council has been based at Dan Breen House, Davis Street, for over forty years. The building has been rented by the Town Council from South Tipperary County Council and has also housed the Tipperary Area office for South Tipperary County Council.
Town Clerk Paul Murray stated that both he and his staff were looking forward to the move and hoped to be in their new modern civic offices within the next two weeks There are approximately thirty office staff currently based in Dan Breen House. ‘We are certainly looking forward to the move into a modern facility where there will be ease of access for everyone to be able use our services and we will also be able to afford people more privacy in their dealings with us,’ stated Mr. Murray.
In relation to the future of Tipperary Library which is co-located with Tipperary Town Council at Dan Breen House, Acting County Librarian Tipperary Joint Library Service, Jeff Codd said that he was delighted with the opportunity to clarify the situation in regard to the Library’s future and confirmed that there is a proposal to re-locate the Library to the Tipperary Excel Heritage Building.
‘There is a proposal to locate the library in the basement of the building which is currently a Dance Studio. However it is not an ideal space for a library and I have commissioned Peter Morrissey Architect to carry out a preliminary assessment on the space on what needs to be done to convert it into suitable space ’, stated Mr. Codd. He said as a central location in the town it had potential but there were issues pertaining to access and also the cost of such a move.
He also explained that Tipperary Joint Libraries Committee was different to all other Library Services in Ireland in that it was a statutory body of its own and separate from both Tipperary South and North County Councils and that they actually owned the Library building at Dan Breen House.
‘There is no down side for us to the Council re-locating to their new offices, in fact we will gain parking space,’ added Mr. Codd.
Asked if there had been at any stage plans to incorporate the Library into the new Civic Offices, Mr. Codd replied that there wasn’t as the Library preferred town centre locations for their particular service as people were more inclined to drop in as opposed to having to make a conscious effort to use their facilities if they were at more peripheral location.
